Aftermath
Introduction
The Civil War lasted for four years, devastated the country (especially the south), caused the death of more than 600,000 soldiers, and changed America forever. But now, there was peace, and all Americans would set to the task of rebuilding the shattered nation. There was a strong desire for healing and forgiveness, but the whispers of revenge soon became a powerful force in the post-Civil War years. It would be a time of turmoil and transition as slavery was abolished, and a new America was born.
